Hello Maximalism: What to Wear to Art Week 2021

by HULA on May 14, 2021

What is the result of being homebound for 1+ years and soon having the opportunity to enjoy one of the largest scale art shows in the world? The answer is maximalism. Say sayonara to the everyday classics of last year and kiss goodbye to whites and neutrals. Shake off the constraints of a lingering recession and social distancing rules with colours, bold shapes and patterns. For the upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong (which we will no longer take for granted), we are ready to go ALL OUT -- and we're not just talking about outfits. Though we have yet to return to complete normalcy, meaning masks are still deemed compulsory and will probably be around for quite some time, we have found a new way of expressing ourselves through editorial eye makeups. Scroll to see our maximalist outfits and the eye make up to go with for this upcoming Art Basel.Ā

Romantic Gothic

PVC Leather with Gothic lace, black sequence, studs and spidery falsies with graphic eyeliner (wearing a mask? Speak with your eyes!), the most romantic rock and roll combination we can think of for Art Basel. Go black this year, but add a sprinkle or a full tablespoon of drama. After all, Art Basel is one of the few events you can go all out in Hong Kong during the pandemic. Inspired by the latest Gucci x Balenciaga runway show, we want to go big on the sleeves. To emulate the sheer element of the runway look, we have picked some of our trendiest Chanel boots to show off parts of your body more conservatively.Ā

It's Bananas Out Here

Not from too far in the past, Prada SS11 made bananas and kooky monkeys fashionable. The bright yellow and tropical orange scream summer and this is the energy we want to inject into this outfit. Bold orange stripes with zesty green and yellow -- summer is here, and Hong Kong is out to have fun.Ā Your eye makeup here is acting as a continuation of the graphic colour blocking -- prep your eyes with your everyday taupe shadow base and draw on your best wing liner in white to add some twist.

Life is Peachy

We are seeing a lot of yellow and green for the summer of 2021. Not so much of the usual white and neutral colours (goodbye minimalism!). With the 90s trend still going in full swing, we've picked Tom Ford's Gucci in 1996 as our inspo for this juicy outfit. Show off your artsy side with this bold colour clashing ensemble. Peachy pink with yellow -- an unexpected but fun and attention-stealing combination. Wear a soft smokey and peachy eyeshadow to bring back some modern day element. Pair with some barely there heel sandals for another nod to the 90s throwback.

Gimme Prints

Nothing's more feminine that a deep V and a floral print. Inspired by Tom Ford's Gucci in 1999, this outfit is for the globe trotters, girls who bounces from one exotic location to the other. Embrace the Hong Kong summer heat with this light and silky Chanel skirtĀ  with the most usual Chanel pattern (which is more girly and casual than any other pieces of the same brand we have seen). Wear it with the equally elegant printed Galliano cardigan to fully realise the print on print dream. When all of this is not dramatic enough, extend and blend your fuchsia eyeshadow with your peachy blusher and add a some gold shimmer to the inner corners of your eyes to give your eyes a twinkly butterfly look.
