6 CHANEL BAGS TO INVEST IN NOW

by Marga Cheng on Jun 24, 2022

Chanel is undoubtedly one of the most iconic fashion houses. For over a century, the brand has been making waves from their iconic little black dresses to their all time classic, Chanel N°5 perfume. But since the end of 2019, the fashion house has increased some of its prices by almost two-thirds. With increases being announced almost every quarter, it doesn’t seem like they are stopping any time soon.

So if you’re thinking of purchasing one of those coveted Chanel items for yourself or as an investment, these are the 6 bags you should be looking out for!

1. The Wallet On Chain

This small, yet stylish, item is a must have for a woman on the go. With a built-in wallet, it's the perfect accessory for carrying the essentials as it boasts six credit cards slots and four pockets. For many, the wallet-on-chain is their entry piece to the world of Chanel and is one of the most popular bags on the Chanel resale market.

One style trick: adjust the length of the straps to create a length that suits you or the occasion.

2. The Boy Bag

Introduced in 2011 by the iconic Karl Lagerfeld, the Chanel Boy Bag instantly rose to fame. According to Lagerfeld, “Chanel used men’s underwear to make dresses; she had this boyish attitude, in fact, it is the very spirit of Chanel. She got it from Boy Capel, the great love of her life, which, incidentally, explains why the new bag is called the Boy Chanel.” Over time, the bag has been adapted into a variety of sizes: mini, small, old medium, new medium, large, and extra-large. However, no matter the size, its standout quilt at the center and signature lock closure makes it easy to point out.

FYI, the cost of the Boy bag also just recently went up (again) in March this year!

3. The Vanity Case

Chanel’s Vanity case is inspired by the chic vanity train cases of the 1960’s and gives off major Audrey Hepburn vibes. Reintroduced in the Spring/Summer 2016 Airplane Collection, the Vanity Case has captured the hearts of bag collectors around the world for its practicality, design and versatility.

Over the years, the Vanity Case has taken on many different fabrics. In 2020, Chanel launched a PVC patent leather model which quickly and surprisingly became even more coveted than an Hermes Birken on the immediate resale market. This bag is definitely another one to watch out for.

4. The Diana Bag

Another bag born under Karl Lagerfeld’s creative direction is the Diana bag. Like many of his other designs, it remains as one of the most sought-after items made by the fashion house. If you haven’t guessed, Lagerfeld designed this bag to honor Princess Diana’s prevalent love for the Chanel Single Flap bag. Although the bag was first released in the 1989s, the bag was reintroduced in Chanel’s Spring 2015 collection. The vintage versions, however, remain a highly sought after Chanel piece by both bag collectors and Diana admirers.

5. The Gabrielle Bag

First revealed in the Spring/Summer 2017, the Gabrielle bag became another major bag collection in Chanel’s line up. As a homage to Gabrielle Chanel, the bag juxtaposes masculinity and femininity to become one fluid style rather than being bound by rigid gender descriptions. It’s original design is inspired by a pair of virtual reality glasses, but the bag has since been updated in many different iterations - including a backpack which has been seen on celebrities all over the globe.

6. The 2.55

Last by certainly not the least, we have the most coveted bag of them all, the 2.55 handbag, which was first released in February 1955. This bag sent shock waves through the entire world, being one of the first bags with shoulder straps. On a more personal note to Gabrielle Chanel, the bag also represents different bits of the designer’s background with the burgundy lining representing the color of the uniform at her orphanage and the small pocket for her love notes. Since then, the bag's popularity has constantly grown larger and larger. Over the last two years, the 2.55 bag has seen a price increase of almost 80% and has been closely compared to an Hermès handbag.
