You Can't Tell If These VMA Looks Are From the 90s or this Year, 2020

by HULA on Sep 04, 2020

Even during the difficult times of COVID, the MTV Video Music Awards have come and gone smoothly this year. Though most of the performances were pre-recorded and there were no large audiences, it didn't stop the likes of Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, Bella Hadid, and many more fabulous stars to add to the flashy and memorable looks of the VMAs. We can't help but notice that many of this year's looks are inspired by the 90s and the early 2000s, from the spikey hairstyles to the low-waist pants and peek-a-boo thong, to dramatically padded blazers. Connecting the present with the past, stroll on the see the best 90s and early 2000s looks from 2020s and of course, the most iconic looks from the actual eras. See if you can tell which outfit is from which year without looking at their faces!

SHEER AFFAIR

The same little black dress with sheer panels but in different decades. Jennifer Love Hewitts may have unknowingly started a sheer affair. Indie brand supporter, Bella Hadid, has opted for a literally barely-there look created by Nensi Dojaka. Whereas Madison Beer went with a sexy LBD look created by Mugler.

Extra Padded

Are we having hallucinations or was Bebe Rexha's outfit something straight out of the 90s? All black (and leather), super padded and not to mention the iconic biker shorts (the new yoga pants?)! An epitome of the 90s, padded blazers are a must-have for them it-girls back in the days. Bebe Rexha was seen wearing a blazer by Lionne Clothing, a reminiscence of Kim Basinger's extra padded and studded biker jacket.

Back to the Future

Lady Gaga is not the one to miss ANY chance to dress up in the most non-conventional way possible. But this time around, seemingly futuristic, Gaga's silver/metallic ensemble is a reminder of Mariah Carey's equally metallic coat/shawl.

2000s AguilERA

Deep V? Checked. Spikey bits coming out of the dress? Checked. Fringey hem? Checked. Doja Cat is the embodiment of Christina's outfits from 2003 and 2006. Completed with 90s obsessions, massive hoop earrings and the almost-grungy glitzy layers of necklaces.
