Why Color Matters

Finding your color palette isn’t just about looking good—it is about feeling confident and making deliberate, sustainable fashion choices. When you understand which tones complement your skin tone, building a capsule wardrobe becomes seamless. Paired with pre-owned circular luxury pieces, color analysis allows you to buy better, invest in quality, and curate a timeless wardrobe.

Part 1: Getting to Know Gigi & Her Journey

Q: What originally inspired you to dive into the world of personal styling and start @thecuratedstyle.hk?

Gigi: I have always been curious why certain people dress so well. The spark started in my early 20s as a young lawyer, having discovered two power suits I would wear to court that really made me feel empowered and confident—they were like my superwoman cape.

A few years ago, I tried personal color analysis in Korea and was surprised by how transformative colors can be. It gave me so much clarity. I wanted to understand the theory behind it and believed that if everyone knew their colors, looking great would be effortless. The passion behind The Curated Style is helping others discover their confidence and charm through color and styling.

Q: What is your own personal seasonal color palette, and how did discovering it change your relationship with fashion?

Gigi: My top tone is Spring Light for a youthful vibe, but the soft pastel colors of the Summer tone also work really well for me. Understanding my personal colors made me fall in love with styling even more—I can genuinely see the magic and empowerment in clothing.

Q: Walk us through your signature daily look.

Gigi: For daily wear, definitely a well-structured pair of jeans with a crisp white shirt. Lately, I've also been very into a pencil skirt moment!

Q: What does a typical 1-on-1 color analysis session with you look like?

Gigi: We start with a brief color theory introduction, followed by three pre-tests: client color preference, a color x personality test, and a skin colorimetry device check to evaluate undertones. Next, we move to the draping station using seasonal fabrics, metals, hair tools, and makeup swatches. Finally, we review the color board, provide styling recommendations, and analyze the client's current makeup collection to match recommended lip and skin tones.

Part 2: General Color Theory & Everyday Practical Tips

Q: For someone building a capsule wardrobe from scratch, what base neutral colors do you recommend?

Gigi:

  • Tops: White, off-white, or light cream.

  • Jackets/Blazers: Navy or burgundy.

  • Skirts/Pants: Greys, navy, or burgundy.

Q: Is the classic "silver for cool / gold for warm" rule still strict, or can you mix metals?

Gigi: There is no strict rule! Many cool-tone clients can wear lighter champagne gold (like 9K or 14K/18K), and warm-tone clients can wear silver depending on styling and color combinations. Silver paired with a black top works wonderfully on warm tones. I love mixing metals when balanced—if you are wearing a plain T-shirt, have fun with mixed metallic statement accessories!

Q: Does seasonal clothing analysis match makeup selection directly?

Gigi: Not necessarily. We use separate tools—16 makeup palettes and 25 lip swatches—for makeup analysis. If your best clothing tone is Winter, that doesn't automatically mean Winter makeup shades will be your best fit.

Q: Do our color palettes change as we age, dye our hair, or tan?

Gigi: Yes and no. When younger, skin condition allows a wider range of colors. As we age, certain shades may magnify wrinkles or dark circles. Your primary seasonal type remains consistent overall, but secondary tones or neutral preferences may shift.

Part 3: Smart Shopping & Pre-Owned Luxury

Q: What is your single biggest piece of advice to stop impulse purchases?

Gigi: Always buy well and consider cut, color, and versatility.

  • Tops/Blazers: Buy in your enhancing color range with silhouettes that flatter your frame.

  • Bottoms: Fit, silhouette, length, and width are far more crucial than exact color matching.

  • Quality: Ensure the fabric holds its shape over time.

Q: What are your top tips for spotting hidden gems when shopping curated pre-owned collections at HULA?

Gigi: Since luxury pre-owned items are one-of-a-kind, ask yourself three questions:

  1. How well does it fit you?

  2. How do you feel when wearing/touching it?

  3. Can you style it with existing pieces in your wardrobe?

Take the time to explore different structures and brands to see what truly makes you feel great!

Look forward to seeing you there!
