Celebrating Mother's Day with HULA's Community Favorites

by HULA Marketing on May 07, 2025

As Mother's Day draws near, we at HULA had the pleasure of connecting with some of our community favorites to uncover the cherished stories and fondest memories they hold of their mothers.

Victoria Tang-Owen

Victoria Tang-Owen, together with her husband Christopher Owen, founded the multidisciplinary design studio Thirty30 Creative, named after their ages at the time. In 2020, they established Victoria Tang Studio to foster closer collaboration between brands and Tang-Owen, emphasizing her unique design vision.

Originally from London and raised in Hong Kong and Japan, Victoria developed a deep passion for art and design during her high school years in Tokyo, which has shaped her career as a creative director, designer, consultant, and brand collaborator.

"My mum's unwavering strength and resilience have always been my greatest inspiration. She consistently puts others first, and the values she instilled in me – kindness, perseverance, and integrity – have been instrumental in shaping me into the person I am today."

How would you describe your mom to our readers?

My mom inspires me every day with her selflessness and strength. She always puts others first, caring deeply for those around her with unwavering love and generosity. Even as she supports everyone else, she never loses sight of who she is—sticking to her own style and values with quiet confidence. Her strong conviction in doing what’s right, no matter the circumstance, is something I deeply admire. To me, she’s not just an incredible woman—she’s the best mom in the world.

"My mom has been a style icon for decades, effortlessly blending timeless elegance with her own unique flair. No matter the trend, she’s always stayed true to herself—confident, graceful, and unmistakably chic. Her sense of style isn’t just about fashion; it’s a reflection of her spirit and individuality."

Angelle Siyang-Le

Angelle Siyang-Le, the Director of Art Basel Hong Kong, has harbored a lifelong passion for art and illustration. In her formative years spent in mainland China, her mother's multifaceted career spanning journalism, trading, and publishing not only instilled a love for travel but also exposed her to diverse creative influences in every city they traversed.

How would you describe your mom to our readers?

My mum has always been incredibly special to me because, since ever, she encouraged me to be completely myself. She never tried to change who I was; instead, she celebrated my authentic personality and gave me the freedom to grow into the person I wanted to be.

From a young age, she inspired me to follow my passions and develop my strengths, nurturing a deep confidence and a passionate spirit within me. She also sparked my curiosity by taking me on trips to explore different cultures, opening my eyes to the rich diversity of the world. Along the way, she taught me important life lessons-how to read between the lines, understand others, and handle challenges with grace. Most importantly, she showed me how to be adaptable and resilient, teaching me to bend without breaking and to thrive no matter where life takes me.

But beyond influencing me, I believe her biggest achievement is the way she has generously supported an entire generation of young people in her community. Her unwavering love, wisdom, and dedication have shaped not only who I am today but also countless others, and that is truly remarkable.

"She has been both a friend and a mentor to many, always ready to listen, guide, and inspire others to find their own paths."

-Angelle Siyang-Le

Alix Lefebvre

Alix Lefebvre is the Assistant Manager of VIP Relations & Styling Coordinator at Tatler Hong Kong. Her deep-rooted passion for fashion ignited at an early age, driving her towards a career in the dynamic world of style and luxury.

How would you describe your mom to our readers?
My mum is the most inspiring person on earth—not only as a loving mother but also as a woman who taught me how to navigate the world independently and with confidence. She climbed the corporate ladder at a very young age, which inspired me to build my own career, aim for the top, and do it all while enjoying the work I do.

She also taught me to always be open to others, to listen, and to keep an open mind. This mindset gave me the courage to leave France and experience life abroad.

But above all, she is the one who inspired me to express myself through fashion. I’ve never met anyone with such a unique sense of style. She has an incredible eye for finding the perfect piece, and what I admire most is her ability to mix and match items that seem so different. She creates outfits that even designers or sales managers wouldn’t imagine putting together.

" She is an icon of individuality through fashion, and it will always remain her personal brand."

-Alix Lefebvre

Camille Sze

Camille Sze, the president of K S Sze & Sons, a renowned family jeweler with a century-long legacy in Hong Kong, was raised in a family deeply passionate about fashion, especially in the realm of jewelry.

How would you describe your mom to our readers?

I like my mom for HULA because she literally practices your philosophy. She preserves her clothes for decades especially her handbags and shoes. She doesn’t like clothes that cannot be treated with care and last at least two decades. It’s uncanny how much you have in common; in terms of values.

Circular Fashion is truly complete when your mom is your style guru. This Mother’s Day, I’d like to thank Cecilia Wong Sze for letting me raid her closet every day. And, for teaching me how to walk around with confidence (no matter where I go, no matter what I’m wearing).

"Keep your head high. Be proud. And, please stop wearing cheap shoes."

-Cecilia Wong Sze

Adele Leung

Adele Leung, a renowned fashion stylist and creative based in Hong Kong, now serving as the style and content editor at HULA.

How would you describe your mom to our readers?
In our culture and upbringing, familial expression is minimal. I appreciate that I have some photos of my mom Susan and me together, because through the photos I can see much deeper a connection that is easily brushed aside by the purely physical experiences.

My mom is someone who knows and adores beauty, she is also very forward thinking. In her generation, with a very hard life and humble beginnings, she managed to get a university degree and was recognised academically(that is why my dad fell in love with her!).

I was so inspired when she told me she bought herself a fur coat with her first pay check, which I have now happily inherited. My mom is very affectionate but has held back that part of herself with her family because an Asian woman and wife is expected to be demure, but I can see how natural she is with people and the affection that flows from her when she feels safe to express that side.

Growing up, my mom was always the stern and boss lady in the house, but she can also be the little girl at times, she puts a lot of details in dressing her 4 foot 10 inch body and often I am melted by how cute she looks, she started doing facials and going to gym with a commitment that inspired me eventually to follow suit.

"A real woman like my mom can’t be boxed, she can be authoritative, cute, demure and stylish all in one."

-Adele Leung

Sarah Fung

Founder, CEO & Chief Brand Officer of HULA

Bringing three decades of fashion industry expertise to the table, Sarah, having navigated various facets of the field, developed a deep understanding and admiration for the intricate process involved in crafting each piece of clothing, from its initial design to reaching the retail shelves. During her time at Lane Crawford, Sarah was confronted with a stark reality: the significant issue of fashion waste plaguing not only the production and retail sectors but also the discourse surrounding trends and the perception of pre-owned garments.

Growing up, Sarah was instilled with valuable lessons by her mother, who taught her essential skills like running a business. Witnessing her mother's unwavering perseverance and commitment, Sarah credits her enduring entrepreneurial spirit to the resilience and determination ingrained in her family. It is with this same determination that Sarah founded HULA, drawing upon her inherited tenacity and love for sustainable fashion to establish a groundbreaking enterprise that aims to redefine luxury retail in Hong Kong.

How would you describe your mom to our readers?
My mother was an amateur singer (she even made her own stage outfits!) who took herself through college at a later stage to become a beauty therapist - (with her own beauty salon in ChinaTown, London, which got me working at the age of 14). As a performer she had me and my sister up on stage from a young age and was often enrolling us into doing small parts on TV. This was great for building our confidence and broadening our horizons. She always managed to have a laugh even though life wasn't always rosy; she was twice-divorced, always struggled with her finances and sadly passed away when she was 40 years old. I knew from an early age the sacrifices and hardship she went through to bring us up even though she loved us dearly.

"She instilled in us that we should grow up to be independent, strong-willed, be educated and enjoy life to its fullest - and we ticked all those boxes to which I attribute the influence she had on us."
