Best Dressed: Golden Globes Edition

This year was no exception as celebrities were clad in sparkles, large ball gowns and playful shapes. Here are HULA's favourites from the star-studded evening.   Sleek and Sparkly [caption id="attachment_8782" align="alignnone" width="960"] Winnie Harlow in LaQuan Smith, Saoirse Ronan in Céline, Zuri Hall in unknown[/caption] Wearing a sparkly dress is always a go-to for celebrities as it photographs well and makes a futuristic statement. Winnie Harlow, Saoirse Ronan and Zuri Hall all wore varying sparkle-filled textiles in sexy silhouettes.   Dark and Romantic Ballgowns [caption id="attachment_8785" align="alignnone" width="960"] Annabelle Wallis in Zuhair Murad, Taylor Swift in Etro Couture, Anna de Armas in Ralph & Russo[/caption] Often when a celebrity wears a ball gown, it is unapologetically feminine and 'princessy'. This Golden Globes a new approach was taken by celebrities like Annabelle Wallis, Taylor Swift and Anna de Armas as they chose to wear darker colours for their ballgowns. The rich tones of the gowns elevate the classic silhouette.   Statement Shoulders [caption id="attachment_8784" align="alignnone" width="960"] Bel Powley in Miu Miu, Jodie Comer in Mary Katrantzou, Da'Vine Joy Randolph in Christian Siriano[/caption] Emphasised shoulders are always a good bet for making a statement. Bell Powley sported a Miu Miu gown where the shoulders offset the deep neckline and columnar skirt. Fan favourite Jodie Comer matched the volume of her Mary Katrantzou gown with sculptural ruffled sleeves. Da'Vine Joy Randolph stunned in Christian Siriano where the fulness of her sleeves balances out the fullness of her skirt.   Suited Up [caption id="attachment_8788" align="alignnone" width="960"] Kate McKinnon in Prabal Gurung, Kerry Washington in Altuzarra, Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Ralph & Russo[/caption] When a woman wears a suit on the red carpet, it instantly looks sleek and sexy. Kerry Washington (wearing Altuzarra) stuck with just a suit jacket to add a touch of masculinity to her intensely sexy skirt and harness. Kate McKinnon and Phoebe Waller-Bridge wore more traditional suits with unexpected textiles.    Red Carpet [caption id="attachment_8783" align="alignnone" width="960"] Nicole Kidman in Omega, Scarlett Johansson in Vera Wang, Helen Mirren in Dior Haute Couture[/caption] Wearing red on the red carpet can end up being a miss if not done correctly. Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson and Helen Mirren all did it right as they wore gowns that mimicked classic red carpet silhouettes with complementary shades of red.   Columnar Shapes  [caption id="attachment_8786" align="alignnone" width="960"] Gillian Anderson in Safiyaa, Cate Blanchett in Mary Katrantzou, Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton[/caption] Mirroring Mariano Fortuny's historic Delphos gown, columnar dresses call back to the Greek era. The silhouette is classic and adds length to the body. Gillian Anderson in Safiyaa wore a sculptural classic gown as Cate Blanchett's Mary Katrantzou dress brought forth pleated and embellished elements to the silhouette. Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton also wore a fairly classic gown, but with a whimsical colour to add contemporary energy.   Futurism [caption id="attachment_8789" align="alignnone" width="960"] Lucy Boynton in Louis Vuitton, Joey King in Iris van Herpen, Shailene Woodley in Balmain[/caption] There was a touch of complete unexpected futurism this Golden Globes season. Lucy Boynton looks right out of a sci-fi film in Louis Vuitton. Joey King stunned in a classic Iris van Herpen creation, and Shailene Woodley brought her inner 'Tron' out in Balmain. This shows how broad the futurism trend is as each celeb took a different approach to look futuristic.   Life is a Fairytale [caption id="attachment_8787" align="alignnone" width="960"] Rose Leslie in Elie Saab, Thomasin McKenzie in Valentino, Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte[/caption] There was no loss of femininity on the red carpet. Rose Leslie wore a stunning emerald Elie Saab fully embellished gown. Thomasin McKenzie sported a light and airy, tiered Valentino gown. Kirsten Dunst looked just like a nymph in the fully laced pink Rodarte.
