Celebrate Love: Iconic Couples Through History

by HULA on Feb 14, 2020

Happy Valentine's Day from us at HULA! Whether you are spending the day in with your honey, hanging out with friends, or relaxing by yourself - we hope you are spending the day feeling loved (self-love included!). We have curated some looks inspired from iconic couples from the 20th and 21st century that embody love and style: Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera [caption id="attachment_9260" align="alignnone" width="960"] 1. Yosuzi 2. Tory Burch 3. Hunting Season 4. Marni 5. Tory Burch[/caption] Two of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Kahlo and Rivera both created iconic Mexican paintings. Rivera is known for his works in reviving a traditional mural format while Kahlo is known for her self-portraits. They had a complicated and spicy relationship that was passionate, truly unique and stunningly creative. This outfit is inspired by Kahlo's artistic and comfortable aesthetic with a breath of her culture.  Audrey Hepburn & Mel Ferrer [caption id="attachment_9263" align="alignnone" width="960"] 1. Céline 2. Prada 3. Marni 4. Bottega Veneta 5. Chanel[/caption] Hepburn and Ferrer costarred on Broadway together for months before getting married. They starred in the War and Peace film after their marriage, further cementing the actor power-couple that they were. While they eventually divorced, Hepburn and Ferrer were together for 14 years and had a son. This outfit is inspired by this image of the sweet couple and depicts the classic 1950s and 60s era of Hepburn's style. Yoko Ono & John Lennon [caption id="attachment_9262" align="alignnone" width="960"] 1. Kopenhagen Fur  2. Diane Von Furstenberg 3. Christian Dior 4. Prada 5. Theory 6. Céline[/caption] Ono and Lennon protested the Vietnam War and created music together throughout their relationship. They held non-violent protests (even one during their honeymoon) and were true believers in peace and love. This look is inspired by the Ono's 1960s and 1970s style. Ellen Degeneres & Portia De Rossi [caption id="attachment_9264" align="alignnone" width="960"] 1. Joan & David 2. Ralph Lauren 3. Christian Dior 4. Georg Jenson 5. Chanel[/caption] After coming out on her show in the late 1990s, Degeneres became the talk of the town. Years later, Rossi met Degeneres (while Rossi was still 'in the closet') and eventually the couple came out as the ultimate endearing power couple. The outfit above is a true Degeneres staple : a slick suit. A suit is still feminine and sexy while looking effortless and strong. Michelle Obama & Barack Obama [caption id="attachment_9261" align="alignnone" width="960"] 1. Paule Ka 2. Emporio Armani 3. Van Cleef & Arpels 4. Rupert Sanderson 5. Mansur Gavriel[/caption] This love story started in a law firm. Michelle was assigned as the former president's mentor and they fell in love from there. Both of the Obamas are known to be whip smart and lovingly respectful towards each other. This outfit is inspired by Michelle's first lady style - a classic dress and gorgeous overcoat. Nothing too flashy, but classic and a statement.
