When a brand messes up, stay with them

If you don’t like what a brand does on the ethical front, you should boycott them, right? That seems like the obvious thing to do, but Linda Greer, a Senior Scientist for the U.S.’s Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and ethical blogger Alden Wicker of Ecocult suggest otherwise. Basically their rationale is that if you tell a brand you will never shop from them again, why would you opinion matter to them since you’re not a customer? Instead, Wicker suggests you should give the brand constructive feedback, such as:

“That dress is so cute, but I can’t buy it because you never joined the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Safety.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“As soon as you commit to only buying certified rainforest-free viscose, I’ll be your customer again.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I was considering buying your shoes, but your competitor released ones made with upcycled ocean plastic. So I bought those instead.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So next time, when you are unhappy about what a brand is doing, try engage rather than just leave. It might just be the most constructive thing to do for you, the brand, the makers and the planet! Read more here.
