Vivienne Tang is no stranger to the wellness scene. Named one of Hong Kong’s “Top 10 Luxury Lifestyle Influencers” by Marketing Magazine, the London/ Switzerland native started her career as an editor at publications such as Prestige, SCMP, #legend and AsiaSpa before she became the go-to resource for everything wellness and retreat when she started online publication Destination Deluxe. How does the Editor-in-Chief, Founder and Influencer maintain her sense of balance and wellness, and where does she think everyone should visit one day? We caught up with her to find out more.
How would you describe what you do?
I run Destination Deluxe, a wellness and travel online magazine I founded in 2016. We go above and beyond to hand-pick the bestresorts, retreats, spas and wellness accessories for time-starved decision-makers who want to balance their health. As your online go-to wellbeing bible for the global nomad, Destination Deluxe also features beauty products, health and fitness tips, and a range of holistic practices, allowing travel enthusiasts to reconnect with themselves and improve their wellbeing.
When did you first get your travel-bug and where did you go?
Growing up with parents from two different cultures, I naturally inherited the travel bug. Living in Switzerland, my family and I would regularly make trips to Asia to visit my relatives on my dad’s side.
Where is the best place you have ever stayed?
I have many favourites, but one of the most epic hotels is without a doubt the Royal Mansour in Marrakesh. You live like a king in your own lavish riad, complete with rooftop pool and underground pathways for your butler who always seems to reappear at the right time when you need something. Think 1001 Nights with all the luxuries you can dream of. Their spa is gorgeous too. The hammam is highly recommended.
And one of my all-time fave experiences was sailing around Raja Ampat aboard the Sequoia yacht – an absolute dream for ocean lovers like myself!
“Wellness” is such a buzzword these days…what does wellness mean to you?
Wellness to me means having a healthy body but also a healthy mind. I believe very much that we create our own reality. Our thoughts and our emotions eventually form our life and the way we look at things. So it’s important to always balance body, mind and spirit.
In addition to a workout regime, I also have a regular meditation practice, which helps me to centre myself and address any emotional or mental imbalances that could possibly be affecting my happiness. Thankfully, nowadays there are more and more people who take mental wellness seriously and make it a priority to balance the mind.
What do you think is the biggest wellness / health myth?
I think some of the juice cleanses out there don’t really hold up, or perhaps it’s more about how we perceive them and the belief that they will completely reboot our bodies. I believe in a balanced diet and incorporating as much plant-based foods as possible, as well as low carb/low sugar meals.
What are some of your favourite places in town in regards to healthy living/ wellness?
My fave place to work out is Barre 2 Barre. Based on Pilates and stretching, barre strengthens and tightens everything, leaving you chiseled and lean.
I also enjoy the gong meditations at Red Doors Studio. I want to go to one of their all night gong events, where you experience the gong vibrations for 10 hours straight. They also offer Kundalini Yoga there, which I love. But I have yet to try their classes.
I was recently introduced to tea ceremonies by Resham Daswani, and I’ve been a fan ever since. The tea ceremonies Resham offers through Spiral Spaces are extremely deep and moving, almost like a meditation or an energy healing session. I can highly recommend them.
In terms of meditations, I join a weekly meditation by Katherine Lucas, who now holds her meditations online, so people all over the world can tune in.
What is the most unusual place you have ever stayed?
I stayed at Nihi Oka, which is part of the super exclusive Nihi Sumba Island resort in Indonesia. You reach the remote Nihi Oka location after a 90-minute trek, and it’s pure paradise. You can enjoy your very own private beach a la Robinson Crusoe and indulge in endless spa treatments, taking in the stunning vistas from your private bale, followed by a candle-lit dinner listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing on the beach, and a memorable night in the one and only one-bedroom Nihioka Honeymoon Villa. But that isn’t it. The following day, you wake up to a bush-cooked breakfast and a magnificent sunrise overlooking the beach. It is one of the most romantic places I’ve been to.
What clothing / accessories / items do you always pack on a trip?
A bikini, kaftan and sandals. I’m such a beach bum. But I’ve also started to bring a backpack and hiking shoes.
Could you ‘rough it’?
I love camping! It’s one of those things I don’t get to do enough! I love being immersed in nature like that.
What is your favorite city to shop?
I actually hate shopping! Believe it or not. Given the fact that I’m an ex-fashion editor, it’s a little bizarre. I shop like a guy. I know what I’m looking for and I go in and get it. That’s why online shopping is working out really well for me. However, if I do have time, like on vacation, I can get into the whole zone and possibly embark on a little shopping spree. So that could be anywhere. I always tend to find little treasures that I bring back with me no matter where I am.
What is on your bucket list?
Too many destinations…Flores, Siargao, Leuser Ecosystem, Soca, and Jerusalem to name a few.
Where would you ideally love to live if you had no restrictions?
Maybe somewhere in Indonesia. I like the ocean, so somewhere by the beach.
Where should everyone try to visit one day?
Raja Ampat! If you love the water, you should definitely visit and go diving/snorkeling. Stay on a liveaboard (possibly charter your own with Sequoia) and sail from destination to destination every day.
