5 key looks for pride month (and other festivals)

Lesbianas de Latino America at the Los Angeles Christopher Street West Pride parade – June 1981

It’s Pride Month so we wanted to pull out all the stops and give you 5 of our top styles to be fabulous in (not limited to and applicable for all fun festivals in your summer calendar)! The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred on 28 June 1969 (where the LGBT community rioted following a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City). So what better way to show strength and positivity than in the way you dress darling! whether it be all shimmering in metallics or beaming rainbow colours – you know that you’re gonna be the life of the party!

Red, yellow, pink, green, orange, purple and blue… cant decide? Wear them all! The rainbow is the symbol for the LGBT movement and in case you didn’t know, the Pride flag was originally created by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, each colour symbolising diversity. We love the instant ‘sunshine’ it adds to any negativity you might encounter.

There’s no looking back, the future is bright and so are you! Popularised in the mid 1960’s when space-age was all the rage – designers such as André Courrèges and Pierre Cardin set the tone for a new mood of informality and explorative sophistication. Thankfully they were right and metallics are still with us today, making any outfit pop. Don’t you just love how you can throw on metallic shoes and accessories with just about any colour?!

Festivals wouldn’t be the same without the ultimate cowgirl look. A significant symbol in the counterculture movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, as seen in films like Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy. To rock this look, wear retro denims, checked shirts, cowboy hats, cowhide minis and of course not forgetting the most important part – fringe, fringe, fringe!

RETRO 1950’s

The iconic pin up girl from the 1950’s is a sweet and innocent look, but behind those dark sunnies is a hot rebellious babe. Dita Von Tease does this well with her overtly feminine style, contradicted with her dark vixen attitude. Perhaps the 50’s is a benchmark in history because it was then that Harry Hay founded the Mattachine Foundation, one of the  first gay rights group. Wear innocent fitted dresses, lots of pop colours like pink, patent leather peep-hole pumps, red lips and curl your bangs for full effect!

From royalty to punk-rockers, kitsch to sophistication, trash to chic, there are many different faces of leopard print. The animal print became popular for women in the late 1960s, during the Bohemian movement. It is one of those prints that will never die and a sure staple in any wardrobe. You can either wear it OTT en-mass from head to toe, or just accessorise with shoes, bag or a top to give you a bit of growl when you need.
