Could influencers move us towards a more sustainable future?

A report from Members of Parliament in Britain released last week states that British shoppers are buying twice as many items of clothing as they did 10 years ago and discarded clothes are piling up in landfill sites. The is just not happening in Britain, but around the world. The following infographic shows the impact in Britain alone.

Part of what’s fueling the insatiable thirst for more and more fashion would be social media influencers’ powerful and constant push for newer looks. Many influencers won’t be seen shot in the same garment twice — but it is a bit of a chicken and egg situation. Is it consumer appetite fueling this phenomenon or influencers’ feeds fueling consumer appetite?

Probably a bit of both. Could more influencers then switch their focus towards promoting sustainably made clothing and better consumption practices? Perhaps it’s not a matter of whether they could, it’s whether they would.
